SKIN TEXTURE & TYPES

Texture and Blending

"Wanting to be a semi-realistic portrait artist, began with wanting to learn how to illusively create skin texture. This task was a bit difficult when it came to wanting to get an effective, balanced, and ‘realistic’ texture on the skin. An iPad is very different from paper; applying a flat color or a simple blend of shadows and highlights is easier on any surface. Applying a skin texture can bring your portrait to life. In this chapter, I show you the skin textures I use in my portraits, how to blend skin, how to create a skin-texture brush, and go over blending modes." - Tionna .N. Watson

MELANIN PALETTE

Diverse Melanin Palette, Light and Undertone Spectrum, Blending and Layers

"When picking a color that will work best, there is a lot of trial and error because there are so many elements that come into play. Yes, you can always just use a reference, but after a while, you may want to drift away from the references and create some-thing that didn’t come from something you have seen before. The goal in creating a palette is to do so based on other factors like undertones and light sources. The skin tone spectrum is endless, and I find it fun to use all of the tones as a base, and then play around, creating skin tones that may not even have names yet. This is what’s so beautiful about black and brown skin. It is diverse and cannot be defined. Keeping this all in mind, I came up with my Diverse Melanin Palette. In this chapter, you will learn an abundance of information regarding skin tone, including a few of my blending techniques."

HAIR TEXTURES & TYPES

Untitled_Artwork.png

Did you know there are at least 6 different hair-curl types?

"Painting black women requires painting black hair. Like skin, hair plays a big part in black culture and identity. It is a part of what makes women of color unique. Black hair symbolizes survival and resistance. It is used as a weapon against oppression, and is a symbol of empowerment, and should be treated as a form of expression in art the way it is in real life.

Procreate does not provide sources that can be used to create such textures. YET. But as we know, Procreate allows us to create brushes using images. So I explored how to create brushes, and how to use them to render realistic hair. I created brushes for drawing straight hair strands, braids, and twists, as well as curl brushes with specific curl patterns such as the type 3 curls and type 4 coils. What I found exciting, and hope you do as well, is the process that went into creating the brushes after I figured out how it was done. Once you get the hang of it, you go crazy and create a lot more brushes that will help create beautiful hairstyles in your artwork.

In this chapter, are two tutorials that show you how to create an afro using a curl brush and how to create a curl brush. Learning to create just one brush will open the doors to a lot more hair brush tools you can make. Also, included is a list of a few of the brushes I’ve created. The second tutorial shows you how to create a braid brush, one realistic and just an outline."

PAPER TEXTURES & OVERLAYS

Paper Texture Brushes & How They Work

"I started out with the paper texture screen protector. I’m sure many digital artists are familiar with this. But after a while, this screen protector became a bit of a pain. They are perfect for making the drawing experience FEEL like you are drawing on a sheet of paper, but it doesn’t have any effect on your work. It’s just an experience. Then I discovered paper texture overlays. In this chapter, I show you how to create a paper texture brush, and this tutorial can be used to create several other brushes. Also in this chapter is a subchapter on how to create the texture overlay."

Learn to Make a Knitting Pattern Brush from Scratch

"When creating fabric texture, it helps to have textured brushes to realistically render some of the most straining and difficult textures like corduroy, lace, knitting patterns, jacquard fabric, and more. Fabric grain sources are not accessible in the app, but like hair texture brushes, grain sources for clothing texture can be created. Most digital painters and illustrators have clothing brushes. You can search the Internet and find many brushes that are being created. But why not learn to create your own? In this chapter, I demonstrate how to create a textured brush tool, how to apply the fabric texture, and how to add a few elements for realism. "
